The Wide Wale...now on Facebook!

Blogging can be a tough business. It's hard getting and keeping people's attention, and there's always that pressure to write something fascinating. When you're angling for a preppy, traditionalist audience--which does not suffer fools gladly--the feeling only becomes more intense. Writing stimulating posts that make interesting points also eats up a lot of time, time that I'm increasingly trying to spend engaging with the multitude of hobbies and interests I've been neglecting. Furthermore, I live the preppy life somewhat vicariously, and never have been able to capture the same kind of allegiance that more authentic observers such as Muffy Aldrich and Heavy Tweed Jacket have enjoyed.  Indeed, the little interest I seem to have generated has flagged considerably in the last few months, inducing a vicious cycle of decreasing posts and decreasing readership.

But I still love preppy style and aesthetics, and still love talking about them with the society of like-minded others. And I've noticed an interesting thing happens when I share random photos and snippets with my preppy friends on Facebook: people respond. Sometimes it's with a comment, sometimes just a "like," but its abbreviated nature notwithstanding, it feels like a real conversation is taking place. Additionally, this method of communication lends itself well to spontaneity, and offers a better venue for the images and observations that cross my path on a daily basis--as well as being a more regular stream for the deep reservoir of archival material I've amassed over the years.

With that in mind, I'm going to try an experiment: a Wide Wale group page on Facebook. While I intend to keep the blog going for a little while longer as a sounding board for more long-winded ruminations, I hope some of you will come check out the group, join, and participate.

Have fun, and as Lisa Birnbach would say, "play nice."

Happy New Year to all!

  1. I recently discovered your blog and I've enjoyed reading it. I'm hoping you keep blogging as I'm not a fan of face book.

    1. Thanks, Kathy! I certainly know what you mean...I have a love-hate relationship with FB myself. But I plan to keep things going here, at least for a little while.
